Isabella is a Turkish-Venezuelan artist who was born and raised in Istanbul and is now living in London. Her practice rests on the premise of painting as ritual, meaning that everything from preparing the materials, to the use of colour and scale, amongst other facets, is treated as ritual. She uses ritual as a way of inducing and processing individual and collective states of transformation through material and bodily gestures of disintegration, embodiment, and enduring stillness. How the material is used is a reflection of this. She also incorporates methods like timed meditations, breath-work, tarot card divination, and time-based pattern-studying through astrological analyses as a way of informing her painterly decision-making. Her work draws inspiration from concepts and symbols associated with the occult: death-rebirth, loss, the unknown, emptiness, the void and the unconscious mind. Over the years, she has amassed a cosmology of diverse occult research and rituals that her painting practice draws from and adds to.
